New Highs in Down Week

Monday, stocks rose 0.6% in Asia but ended little changed in Europe and the U.S. on 22B shares traded. The VIX gained 7% to end at 18.38. Precious metals and their miners advanced 3%. The NASDAQ and S&P 500 indices logged new closing highs as the S&P 500 also ended above its 7400 benchmark.

Tuesday, stocks lost 0.9% in Asia and 1.0% in Europe but ended up slightly in the U.S. on 22B shares traded. IBM closed below 220.

Wednesday, stocks advanced 0.7% in Asia and 0.9% in Europe but ended down slightly in the U.S. on 20B shares traded. The NASDAQ and S&P 500 indices logged new closing highs.

Thursday, stocks climbed 0.5% in Asia, 0.8% in Europe, and 0.6% in the U.S. on 19B shares traded. Precious metals fell 3% and their miners gave back 2%. The NASDAQ and S&P 500 indices logged new closing highs as the Dow, S&P 500 and NYSE closed above their respective 50,000, 7500, and 23,000 levels.

Friday, stocks fell 2.3% in Asia, 1.6% in Europe, and 1.3% in the U.S. on 19B shares traded. The VIX rose 7% to end at 18.43. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield shot up 3% to end at 4.60. Precious metals plummeted 5%, and their miners dropped 7%. The Dow, S&P 500 and NYSE closed below their respective 50,000, 7500, and 23,000 levels. Apple closed above 300.
