Chip Stocks Soar

Monday, stocks rose 2.7% in Asia but fell 1.1% in Europe and 0.6% in the U.S. on 17B shares traded. The VIX rose 8% to close at 18.29. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield rose 2% to end at 4.45. Dow and NYSE ended below their 49,000 and 23,000 levels respectively.

Tuesday, stocks lost 0.4% in Asia but gained 0.8% in Europe, and 0.5% in the U.S. on 17B shares traded. The VIX fell 5% to close at 17.38. Precious metals gained about 1%. The NASDAQ and S&P 500 logged record closing highs. The NYSE closed above its 23,000 benchmark

Wednesday, stocks advanced 3.5% in Asia, 2.3% in Europe, and 1.2% in the U.S. on 20B shares traded. Precious metals shot up 5% and their miners jumped up 8%. The S&P 500 ended above 7300 and registered another closing high.

Thursday, stocks gained 2.1% in Asia but lost 1.1% in Europe and 1.2% in the U.S. on 20B shares traded. Precious metals ended up 1%. The NASDAQ posted a new closing high. IBM ended above its 230 benchmark.

Friday, stocks fell 1.0% in Asia, 0.7% in Europe, and 0.3% in the U.S. on 19B shares traded. The NASDAQ and S&P 500 logged record closing highs. The NASDAQ ended above its 26,000 level while the NYSE closed below its 23,000 benchmark
