Hopium Drives Dow to Record High

Monday, stocks ended unchanged in Asia but gained 0.3% in Europe, and 0.4% in the U.S. on 12B shares traded. Precious metals fell 1%.

Tuesday, stocks rose 0.6% in Asia but fell slightly in Europe and ended little changed in the U.S. on 11B shares traded. Precious metals miners lost 2%. The CPI news did little to move the needle in stocks.

Wednesday, stocks lost 0.4% in Asia closed unchanged in Europe but shot up 1.7% in the U.S. on 15B shares traded. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield fell 3% to end at 4.17. Precious metals gained 6% and their miners jumped twice that amount. Apple closed above its 190 benchmark. Average closed at an all-time high above 37,000. The S&P 500 index ended above its 4700 benchmark. Hope that the FOMC will ease sooner next year spurred the Dow to its record high.

Thursday, stocks gained 1.6% in Asia, 0.7% in Europe, and 1.0% in the U.S. on 17B shares traded. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield fell 2% to end at 3.93. Precious metals rose 1%.

Friday, stocks rose 1.0% in Asia, ended unchanged in Europe, and fell 0.7% in the U.S. on 20B shares traded. Options expiration accounted for much of the high trading volume. Precious metals lost 1%. Finally, the Federal Reserve balance sheet advanced 3B to 7.74T.
