Stocks Gain Despite Strong Jobs Report

Monday, stocks gained 0.6% in Asia, fell slightly in Europe, and declined 0.3% in the U.S. on 10B shares traded. The VIX moved up 7% to close at 22.78.

Tuesday, stocks dropped 1.3% in Asia, fell slightly in Europe, and lost 0.8% in the U.S. on 11B shares traded. The VIX rose 5% to close at 23.93. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield jumped 5% to close at 2.74. Precious metals and their miners fell 1%.

Wednesday, stocks closed unchanged in Asia but gained 0.4% in Europe, and 0.7% in the U.S. on 12B shares traded. The VIX fell 8% to close at 21.95.

Thursday, stocks advanced 0.7% in Asia and moved up slightly in Europe but declined 0.3% in the U.S. on 12B shares traded. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield fell 3% to close at 2.68. Precious metals advanced 2% and their miners gained about twice that amount.

Friday, stocks gained 0.9% in Asia but fell 0.7% in Europe and 0.3% in the U.S. on 11B shares traded. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield shot up 6% to close at 2.84. Precious metals fell 1%. The payrolls data came in strong — prompting concern that the Fed will not be deterred from aggressive tightening . For the week, the Federal Reserve balance sheet declined slightly to $8.87T.
