Rising Yields Pressure Stocks

Monday, stocks gained 1.1% in Asia, 0.8% in Europe, and 0.3% in the U.S. on 11B shares traded. The VIX fell 5% to close at 18.57. Elon Musk captured the headlines today by revealing a 9.2% stake in Twitter. Here’s an article that asserts that the Federal Reserve is not able to control or predict the economy.

Tuesday, stocks closed little changed in Asia, gained slightly in Europe, but fell 1.1% in the U.S. on 12B shares traded. The VIX moved up 13% to close at 21.03 and enter the fear zone. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield shot up 6% to close at 2.56. Precious metals fell 1% and their miners gave up twice that amount. IBM closed below its 130 benchmark.

Wednesday, stocks fell 2.0 % in Asia, 1.4% in Europe, and 0.4% in the U.S. on 13B shares traded. The VIX rose 5% to close at 22.10. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield moved up 2% to close at 2.61. Precious metals gained 1%.  Tha NASDAQ and S&P 500 indices ended below 14,000 and 4500 respectively. FOMC minutes indicate more tightening coming faster than expected.

Thursday, stocks lost 1.6% in Asia, fell slightly in Europe but gained 0.3% in the U.S. on 12B shares traded. S&P 500 index closed above 4500. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield moved up 2% to close at 2.75.

Friday, stocks closed little changed in Asia but gained 1.4% in Europe and 0.4% in the U.S. on 11B shares traded. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield moved up 2% to close at 2.71. Precious metals gained 1% and their miners rose twice that amount. The S&P 500 Index ended below its 4500 level.
