Mortgage Rates Above Five Percent

Tuesday, stocks lost 0.9% in Asia and 0.8% in Europe but gained 1.2% in the U.S. on 11B shares traded. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield moved up 2% to close at 2.91. Precious metals fell 2% and their miners gave back 3%. The S&P 500 closed above its 4400 level.

Wednesday, stocks rose 0.7% in Asia, 0.9% in Europe, and 0.6% in the U.S. on 11B shares traded. The VIX fell 5% to close at 20.32. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield fell 3% to close at 2.84.The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above the 35,000 level on the strength of a strong earnings report by IBM which shot up 7% to close well above the 130 benchmark. Precious metals gained 1% while mortgage rates soar.

Thursday, stocks rose slightly in Europe declined 0.3% in Asia, and 1.6% in the U.S. on 12B shares traded. The VIX rose 12% to close at 22.68. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield moved up 3% to close at 2.92. Precious metals fell 1% and their miners lost 5% in reaction to Newmont earnings and revenue misses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 Index closed below their respective 35,000 and 4400 benchmarks.

Friday, stocks fell 1.6% in Asia, 1.7% in Europe, and 2.7% in the U.S. on 12B shares traded. The VIX shot up 24% to close at 28.21. Precious metals fell 1% and their miners lost three times that amount. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, NASDAQ, and S&P 500 closed below their respective 34,000, 13,000, and 4300 benchmarks. For the week, Netflix lost 37% in reaction to a bad earnings report on Tuesday.
