Stocks Decline

Monday, stocks fell 0.4% in Asia, 1.8% in Europe, and 2.0% in the U.S. on strong volume. The VXO shot up 16% to close at 34.56. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield fell 5% to close at 0.80. Precious metals dropped 1% and their miners fell about twice that amount. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed below 28,000 while the NYSE ended below its 13,000 benchmark.

Tuesday, stocks gained 0.5% in Asia but lost 0.9% in Europe and in the U.S. on strong volume.

Wednesday, stocks fell 0.4% in Asia but plummeted 3.0% in Europe and 3.1% in the U.S. on extremely high volume. The VXO jumped up 22% to close at 42.71. Precious metals plunged 3% and their miners gave up about twice that amount. The Dow closed below its 27,000 level and the S&P 500 ended below its 3300 benchmark.

Thursday, stocks in Asia and Europe closed unchanged but gained 0.7% in the U.S. on high volume. The VXO moved up 7% to close at 37.59. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield jumped up 7% to close at 0.84.The S&P 500 closed above its 3300 benchmark.

Friday, stocks in Asia lost 1.8%, in Europe were unchanged, and in the U.S. fell 0.6% on very high volume. The VXO moved up 5% to close at 41.47. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield jumped up 5% to close at 0.86. Precious metals gained 1% and their miners moved up about twice that amount. The NASDAQ and S&P 500 indices closed below their respective 11,000 and 3300 benchmarks.
