Week Fourteen

Grace Week Fourteen
Borador Puppy

At about 3:30 AM Sunday, Betsy felt like Grace was keeping her awake by using various of her body parts for a pillow. When I found her, she was stretched right in the middle of the bed between us asleep. I dragged her out and locked her in her cage. Grace caused no disturbance.

The alarm clock sounded at 7:00 AM. I got up and took her outside until 8:00. It was a bit damp out, but the temperature was pleasant.  I fed her (one cup plus Vitamin E) Betsy locked her in her cage at 9:20 before heading on to meet me at church. We returned at noon. I took Grace outside until 1:40. She found a 24 ounce Coors beer can to entertain her for a while. She’s improving at being called back from distractions like people and dogs. She visited Tucker and Isabel through the bars. She then had a fun time sloshing around the drainage pond.

At 2:00 Grace started getting irritated. We had neglected giving her lunch. Betsy fed her (one cup) followed by a dental chew. Grace jumped up on the bed. At that point I decided to give her a bath.

Sunday Bath

Grace does not like baths. She avoids them and tolerates them. I told her to come into the bathroom. She went the other way. I became more insistent, and she walked dutifully to her cage. I grabbed all four feet and dragged the “sack of potatoes” to the door of the cage. I then picked her up and placed her in the tub. She put up with it like a trooper but was not particularly pleased with the situation.

I used Selsun Blue putting spots first in her problem areas and then applied it to her spine, working the suds down from there. She jumped out when she thought we were through, but didn’t fight me when I lifted her back in. After ten minutes, we were done, and Grace was a clean puppy once again. After shaking off  while I toweled her and dragging herself around on the carpet, she went outside on the balcony. As she sat on the lounge chair, she looked particularly tall.

At 5:30, she came in and asked for dinner. I gave her a half cup and then we did tricks for treats. When she finished I gave her a large round oatmeal container to play with. She tossed it in the air before tearing it apart. She seemed particularly active. Both Betsy and I played tug and fetch with her and we gave her the bully stick to chew.

Betsy took her outside at 7:55 and returned at 8:10. Grace came in and went out on the lounge chair.

Monday

The alarm went off at 7:00. Grace was still sleeping. I took her out. The grounds were wet and the humid, air invigorated heightened Grace’s sense of smell. She raced through the grounds at double-time. She explored the woods and eventually met up with the biggest dog in the neighborhood.

Play and Clean Up

After saying “Hi” and moving on, we spotted Dakota. Grace played with him for about fifteen minutes, when his owner had to go inside. Grace stopped by Dakota’s porch one last time. It was touching to watch him reach through the bars and hug her and scratch vainly at the patio floor to dig a path below the bottom rail. After a few minutes we left. We returned home at 8:45. She was dirty, so I put her in the tub for a quick rinse and dry. Grace seemed much more at ease this time. Could it be the lower water level, no soap, or just the short duration? I don’t know.

Good Stay

I fed her (one cup). She quickly proceeded to the balcony, where she stayed until 11:10. At 11:15, she curled up on the sofa. I put on my jacket to go running. Grace proceeded to the door. I directed her back to the sofa and told her to be a good girl. She curled up there as instructed. When I returned at 11:45, there was Grace, just as I had left her. I praised her and gave her a treat. I then fed her lunch (one-half cup).

She then returned to the balcony lounge chair to survey the activity below and take in the fresh air. At 12:45, she came in, curled up on the sofa, and went to sleep. An hour later, she was back on the balcony. She stayed there until 3:00 when I took her for a walk to the car and then for a ride.

Afternoon Ride

Our walk involved crossing a four-lane road at a traffic light. She followed, running. I couldn’t have asked for more. We drove next to the tailor shop to take her PetCo halter (my favorite, shown in Week Seven) to get a few seams stitched up before they unravel. She stayed in the car.

Grace usually likes to lie down when the car is moving. When the car is stopped or moving slowly, she usually sits up. If she is waiting alone in a parked car for more than ten minutes, she will likely curl up and nap. We returned home so I could pick up something that I had forgotten. I left her tied to the bench for one minute while I raced upstairs and raced back, I told her to stay. She obeyed immediately.

I unhooked her and we headed on our way. After I parked the car, I made sure it was locked and the windows were cracked just slightly. There was no sun and the temperature was just in the mid sixties, so the car was fine climate-wise for her. When I returned twenty minutes later, Grace was curled up calmly napping.

I took her for a walk around the parking lot. She sat at crossing point (not a crosswalk) while we waited for traffic to let up. It never did. One lady tried to help by stopping for us, but cars were coming from other directions. I finally gave up. We walked another hundred feet to the crosswalk at the light and crossed easily there. Again, Grace did great crossing with no delay or tugging needed.

After we circled the lot, I locked Grace back in the car and headed back to the store to complete my shopping. When I returned twenty minutes later, Grace again was curled up napping. She has never had the slightest inclination to do anything destructive in a car. Perhaps she views it something like furniture — which she understands is off limits for biting and chewing.

Afternoon Walk and Play

We returned home at 4:45. I fed her (three-quarter cup), put her in another harness, and took her outside for her afternoon exploration time. At 5:15, Betsy arrived right near where we were hanging out in the courtyard. Grace bounded toward her happily greeting her. Betsy went inside to make supper, while we continued our walk.

It was getting dark, but Grace wanted to go behind the back fence. The fence blocked the street light where we were walking. I forgot about he rusted iron fence post that stuck up about 18 inches. I tripped over it was okay. Grace looked back to be sure I was not hurt. Grace grabbed a drink can and brought it back to the courtyard. After playing with it a while, she spotted Rhino.

Today Rhino was ready to play. He likes to be chased. Grace obliged. Rhino liked running around the outdoor barbecue area and under the associated furniture. The game lasted for about fifteen minutes. We returned to the apartment at 6:30. Grace seemed a bit demanding with a silent bark at Betsy for a few minutes but then settled down to a serious nap on the dining room floor.

Winding Down

At 8:30, I went into the kitchen to get a snack that was enough to disturb Grace. Betsy thought that she may have swallowed a chicken bone from the trash. I wasn’t concerned. Time will tell whether or not it causes any problem. I took her out a 8:45. She continues to broaden the perimeter of where she leaves her mark. Dogs have an instinct to dig into the turf with their back feet and claws after they do their business. Sometimes it can be a bit messy if her flinging foot hits any of the pile. That rarely has happened with Grace, but it’s something I watch out for now.

I just had her on the collar. She was an absolute breeze in responding to my lead. There was no tugging and no coaxing required. I’ll call this a milestone for effortless leash response. She still stopped occasionally to sniff the air or linger at as spot of ground, but that was it.

When we returned at 9:10, Betsy said Grace seemed particularly hungry. I recalled that Grace had not received her dental chew for the day. Betsy gave her one. It seem like when we feed Grace, she needs more than calories and other nutrition. I think this is more than the need for teething. Grace continues to inhale her food. I’m getting the idea, she needs to be forced to linger longer with the eating process, perhaps to trigger more saliva production or maybe just to allow the body to respond with the “full” indication.

At 9:25, she still had some energy left. She whimpered at me in the chair. I moved over to the sofa. She joined me there and brought a slipper up with her to entertain her. Grace passed out on the sofa. Betsy decided to leave her there and shut the bedroom door.

Tuesday

Some time around midnight, Betsy heard Grace. She opened the bedroom door and Grace promptly jumped in bed with us. There were three of us side-by-side in the space of a twin bed—Grace against the wall, then me and then Betsy. After a few hours, I moved over and called Grace to the junction of the adjacent twin bed. They are covered by a king-size quilt, so there was no danger of her falling between the beds. Grace did fine.

Extreme Exercise

The alarm clock went off at 6:20. Betsy got up, but Grace lingered. At 6:00, she and I arose and went outside. Immediately, we saw Dakota and morning play began. I noticed that Dakota’s owner used the command “wait.” I decided that’s better than “just a minute.” After about fifteen minutes, Brantly joined the fun. At that point, Grace was the rabbit and Dakota and Brantly the wolves. Grace could not outrun them. Brantly would grab her by the hindquarters and take her down. Then the two of them would work on her (play fighting) while she was on her back.

She would get away, and even attack back. Grace is an energetic and feisty little puppy. This scenario must have repeated about five times or more before play time had to end. Just then Rhino and Cato met her to say, “Hi.” Grace then proceeded to her exploring mode. We went out front and then spotted Tucker below and through the fence. We were in the middle of the fence, so we ran one direction about 50 yards to get around the fence, then around the building and back down to meet Tucker. Grace and Tucker played a few minutes before Tucker had to go.

At 8:15, we spotted Betsy heading for the car. Grace raced to meet her and say “Good-bye.” We returned at 8:30. I fed her (one cup with Vitamin E). I decided to rinse her off in the bathtub to get any mud and slobber off of her from the extreme play session. Grace took it in stride. She didn’t appreciate having water poured over her head, but she didn’t even fight that. I toweled her off in the tub. Grace then jumped out at my command and shook off. I praised her and gave her a treat. She then proceeded to the lounge chair on the balcony for final drying and a nap.

At 9:45, I took the trash out, and brought Grace with me. She came very easily. Causing me no delay related to having her with me.

Home Alone

I left at 10:00 and returned at 1:15. I left Grace on the sofa and returned to find her on the love seat. No damage was done. I praised her, fed her (half cup), and took her outside for our afternoon time. She spent a lot of time in the vacant lot next to the complex. She was spooked there by something I could never find. I went down there and she followed to find nothing.

Grace Carded

At the end of our journey, Grace found an unopened can of beer. She dropped it once or twice as she brought her weighty prize up to the courtyard area. As she chewed on the can, suddenly, beer shot out at her from the agitation through a hole she had just poked. It startled us both. She wanted to drink it, but she’s underage. I threw it in the trash.

Afternoon Errands

At 3:00, we went upstairs. Grace lay on the sofa to recuperate from the activity time. At 3:30, we went for a ride to the drug store to make photo prints to go in Christmas cards, to the tailor shop to pick up her repaired PetCo harness. At the drugstore, the cashier couldn’t help but notice how cute Grace’s photos were. I told her about this website and encouraged her to check it out. I told her Grace was with me.

We went outside. I introduced Grace to the cashier and manager. Grace demonstrated to them the commands that she knows. They were impressed with her and invited her inside the store. When we finished there, we went to the tailor shop to pick up her PetCo halter.

Grace wanted to come in. The lady obliged. They have a full length corner mirror. Grace was concerned about the dog she saw in the mirror. It spooked her. I took her up closer to it to let her see what it was. That helped some, but she may not have completely captured the concept.

Supper Time

When we returned home at about 5:00, she wanted to do some more turf surfing. We went upstairs, and I fed her (three-quarter cup). As soon as she finished, she gave met some sharp claps of her jaws (silent bark) to tell me it was time for “tricks for treats.” She almost effortlessly went through the list. Sometimes she does a “roll” in response to “tummy.” I’ll work on distinguishing the two and thereby teach her another command.

Since Grace is spending more time on the furniture, I’m rinsing her off more frequently. After dinner, I installed a shower head with a hose to make the task easier. Grace again retreated to the safety of her cage. I picked her up and weighed her at 37 pounds while I had her in my arms. We just did a rinse. She did well again. When we finished, she jumped up on her sofa and took a nap.

Evening Energy

Betsy came home at 6:00. Grace greeted her from the balcony and met her at the top of the stairway. Grace seemed out of sorts. Betsy asked me if I fed her. As we ate, she watched a bit and acted hungry. Betsy asked if I had given her a dental chew. I hadn’t. We tried that. It kept her occupied for about ten minutes before she consumed it. Then it was on to a relentless evening of “tug and fetch.” She’s preferring the Kong toy lately for this because of the funny bounces it makes and the ability to chew down on it.

At 8:30, she finally gave up and stretched out on the sofa. At 9:10, I took her outside. She met up with Tucker and Isabel doing their walk. I was on a cordless phone, preventing me from venturing outside the courtyard. We returned inside at 9:30. I told her to get in her cage. She went directly and obediently.

Wednesday

The alarm clock sounded at 6:30. Both I and Betsy greeted Grace. She did her normal morning sounds and stretches. I put on her harness and collar. At 6:45, we headed out. We spotted Baxter and said “Hi” to him. While I was talking with his owner, Grace suddenly became very urgent to go.

My guess was she picked up Dakota’s scent. She streaked the direction toward his apartment. He wasn’t there. She headed to the far end of the building. He wasn’t there either. As we turned the corner, we found him. Grace played with him about fifteen or twenty minutes. Dakota had to go, so we moved on.

At 8:00, Betsy headed for the car. We had just emerged from behind the rear screening fence. Grace raced to meet her and say “Good-bye.” Grace said “Hi” to Cato, and I demonstrated to his owner how Grace responds to the “Come” command by calling her to me from being with Cato. Grace responded flawlessly. Of course, that would still be a bit dicey of the other dog were Dakota, Tucker, Isabel, or Fraggle. She’s getting there though.

We returned home at 8:30. I fed her (one cup plus Vitamin E).  I sat down on the sofa to work on the computer and finish up Christmas cards. Grace had other ideas. There she was, back with the Kong toy. After all of that exercise, would this be my fate for the next three hours? We played “tug and fetch” for about ten minutes. Finally, she relented, stretched out on the sofa and took a nap.

At 11:00, I took Grace to the post office. She did fine. She look cute sitting pertly in the passenger seat watching for me to return. She hung out with me on the sofa until noon. I fed her (one-half cup). She then proceeded to entertain herself, first with her sticks, then with balls, and finally her toy box. A few times she would test the balcony, but at 45 degrees and cloudy, it’s not particularly inviting. She came back in promptly each time. By 1:20, she was getting ready for our afternoon walk. I told her to wait. She obediently balled up on the sofa.

Ups and Downs

At 1:40, we went outside. Grace has a lot of fun running up and down a steep twenty-foot hill with various objects in her mouth. Later she jumped up to try to scale a four and a half foot wall from a standing start. She’s so strong, she almost made it. We returned at 3:10. I got ready to go running. Grace grace got off of the sofa thinking that I was going to take her out. I directed her back to the sofa and told her I was leaving and would be back soon. When I returned a half hour later she was still there on the sofa. At 4:00, we rode to the tailor’s. The article wasn’t ready so we came back home. It was starting to sprinkle, so we went directly back to the apartment.

At 4:45, she was starting to get a bit agitated. She brought me the tennis ball. She fetched a few times. She was more interested in catching the ball as it bounced. She then went back to her bully stick. At 5:30, she curled up on the ottoman and sofa next to me. Betsy come home at 5:50. Grace stayed on the sofa as Betsy greeted her. By 6:00, she waited long enough for dinner. Betsy fed her (three-quarter cup). She then told me it was time for “treats for tricks.” We breezed through them, and ended up with a dental chew.

Lobotomy

Grace wanted to play. She picked her rag doll toy. We did the usual “tug and fetch” routine. Lately, I’ve been working on making her more carefully keep her eye on the ball. I do a fake throw. Usually the first time I do this she bolts in the expected direction of the throw. After the fake, she pays better attention. We played with the doll for about fifteen minutes. Then she seemed to be occupied with it on her own.

The reason for her fascination was that she was performing a serious operation. She removed the squeaker from the head of the doll and stored it in her mouth. Then she proceeded to continue the lobotomy, carefully removing head contents one piece at a time. After she was half way through, I took it, re-stuffed it, and put it up for Betsy to repair.

Last Time Out

I took her out at 8:50. It was cold and rainy outside. Grace promptly did her business and returned inside at 9:00. As usual, she collapsed on the sofa. At 10:15, I called her to bed. She went obediently. I locked the cage.

Thursday

I got up at 5:15. Grace must have heard me. She whimpered. I took her out at 5:30. It was still nasty out (wet and cold). There was no action. We encountered nobody. At 5:50 we returned. Grace and I jumped up on the bed where we stayed until 7:00. At 7:15 Grace spotted Fraggle in the courtyard. The owner said he would see if his son could bring Fraggle back. Grace was very excited.

I took her out at 7:30. We walked by courtyard and Fraggle’s place a few times. At 7:45. we finally spotted Fraggle in the courtyard. They played until 10:15, when I finally had to go in. It was between 35 and 40 degrees during the play marathon. One side of my thumb went numb from exposure. One of the the two dogs sliced Grace’s leash in two places. It was amazing how fast they made mincemeat of the leash.

I fed her (one cup with Vitamin E). I left her uncaged at 10:45. When I returned at 1:00, Grace lay calmly on the sofa. She let out a big yawn as I approached her. She had disturbed nothing. I praised her and gave her a treat. I then fed her (one-half cup). She lounged as I fixed and ate brunch. Grace decided to enjoy the sunny 50 degree afternoon out on the balcony. By 2:45, she came inside and began complaining that it was past time for her afternoon walk. I told her to wait.

New Horizons

We left at 3:00 to go for a ride. We stopped first at the post office. We proceeded from there to my land, a 2.34 acre lot in a Cary subdivision. We’re trying to determine whether to sell it or build a house on it. Grace was excited about the new place to explore. She wanted to also go to the farmland and landscaped lot across the street. On this trip I wanted to limit her travels to my lot. She deftly jumped up three feet to mount a huge pine tree that died a few years ago and walked the distance on the natural balance beam.

When we reached the northeast corner, a dog barked. That spooked Grace. She ran off back into my lot. I called her back as we headed west. As we approached the neighboring house, Grace started barking. They have a fenced area about 100 feet away with animals and a large trampoline with a high screen. I think it was the trampoline that had her spooked, but I’m not sure.

Roads with parking on both sides surround the complex where we currently live. Grace is not sufficiently aware of the danger of walking on the road. While the road by my lot is residential, it has more and much faster traffic. I had to repeatedly call Grace back from the road. If we lived there, she would need to learn to stay off of it. We left at 4:30.

Chew, Chew, Chew

At 5:00, we returned. Grace first lay on the dining room floor and worked on her stick. She left a small bowl full of wood chips in her wake. At 5:30, she moved to her sofa. I fed her at 5:50. She insisted on “treats for tricks” afterward. At 6:00, Betsy arrived home. We went down to greet her and help her bring up the groceries. As Grace sniffed the loaf of bread, we remembered the bread incident with Granddaddy (a Borador) during his final days. As we finished up our supper, Betsy found a few scraps of lamb to give Grace. She also gave Grace a dental chew.

At 7:30, Grace insisted we play tug and fetch with the tennis ball. She uses her paws fairly freely these days to maneuver into position. She finally relented at 7:50  and moved to her stick. I noticed the molar nubs in her mouth have come out prominently now. Perhaps she will back off some on the chewing. While she has learned to limit her chewing to allowed objects, she still has an almost insatiable need to chew. Now she’s working on her antler with her bully stick at her side.

Friday

I got up at 6:15. Grace heard me and let me know. When I reached her cage, she was sitting up. My guess is that she was awake, patiently awaiting some signal that we were awake also. I took her out at 6:30. After a few minutes, we met Dakota’s owner returning from the gym. We agreed to met out back. When we went back, Brantley was already back there.

Theatre

The play started the same as before with the threesome. Brantley and Dakota were the wolves and Grace was the rabbit. There was less running today as Grace was taken down and fake-mauled quickly. Brantley’s owner called him off a few times to get the dogs running again. Then Brantley left. Grace and Dakota then went at it as a twosome. They did mainly wrestling and a bit of stick tugging. After a while, Dakota had to leave.

As I was putting Grace’s harness back on her, there came Fraggle. I took it back off, and Grace was off to Act 3 of this play. By 7:55, Fraggle’s owner needed to leave for work. It’s truly amazing the nearly boundless energy Grace exhibits. We returned to the apartment at 8:00. She lay on the dining room floor recovering from the action. I fed her (one cup with Vitamin E). She then climbed up on the sofa. When I made it to the sofa with my laptop ten minutes later, she moved over by my side.

Vet

We left for the vet at 10:20.While we waited in the examination room, Grace acted like she wanted to get out. She weighed in at 39.1 pounds. The vet said she may not reach her full weight until one year, but her skeletal development will be finished in a month or two. He said she will likely end up around 50 pounds.

I went ahead and had a chip inserted. The vet charged $45.50. The AKC enrollment of the chip is $17.50. The vet saw no early evidence of impending heat. He said it could be still three or four months and will be obvious. He says the first heat takes longer. He checked for mites. The spot on her arm had only a few dead ones. He said to keep applying the cream there and also on a spot on her inner thigh.

Suitable for Shredding

When we arrived home, Grace looked at me like I had betrayed her. She first lay in the sun by the balcony door and then moved outside on the balcony. At noon Grace asked to come in. I gave her an empty cracker box and later an empty paper towel roll. Any cardboard box or roll is now suitable for shredding by Grace. It’s a fun and fulfilling activity for her. At 1:00, she went back out on the balcony, sitting on the lounge chair and surveying the grounds below.

She came inside. I went running, leaving her home alone. When I returned, she lay on her sofa peacefully. I praised her and gave her a treat. Grace grew increasingly impatient as the sunny, pleasant afternoon beckoned her. We were about to receive a visit from maintenance, so I wanted to wait until they had come and gone.

Fraggled

At 2:00, they finished and we were on our way. I took a letter to mail and the trash to discard. As we headed for the trash, Fraggle’s owner told me that Fraggle was coming outside to play. We quickly deposited the trash and returned. They had fun playing tag and roughhouse until 3:45 when Fraggle had to go inside.

At 5:30, I got up from my chair and grabbed a sweet and some milk. Grace saw that as her queue for supper. I fed her (three-quarter cup). She told me she was ready for “tricks for treats.” She went through them flawlessly. After I teach her “roll,” I’m concerned that I’ve run out of dog commands for her. I can teach her the names of objects and to put away her things, but other than that, I’m stuck. She still could respond better when distracted, so I can also work on that.

Bored but Together

We had to cope with the usual boredom of the evening hours. We gave her a dental chew, which worked for about fifteen minutes. We threw the Kong toy for fetch. She asked repeatedly to go out on the balcony, but every time she came right back in. At 9:00, Betsy took her outside. They returned in ten minutes.

The three of us hung out on the sofa together until 10:30. We went to bed and left Grace on the sofa. We left the bedroom door open. I suppose around midnight, Grace jumped up on the bed. She stayed with us through the night. I got up around 5:30 for a few minutes and returned. Grace sat up, but when I got back into bed, she settled back down. She spent a fair amount of time washing herself while waiting for me to take her out.

Saturday

At 6:50, I got up. Again, Grace sat up. I told her we were going outside. She jumped off of the bed and moved to the door. She waited patiently while I dressed. We left the house at 6:00. It wasn’t as cold as Friday but still cold enough to require a winter jacket and hat. We returned inside at 8:30. I gave her breakfast (one cup plus Vitamin E).

Servicing My Car

At 9:00, I left to go get my car serviced and then pick a few things at the store. I returned at 11:00 and took Grace down with me to change air filters in my car. I allowed her to roam freely while I worked, but made sure she didn’t stray far. While I worked on the engine air filter, Rhino walked by. Grace raced to meet with him and play. They spent ten minutes mixing it up.

After I finished up the engine filter, I tied her to the car while I worked on the cabin filter. After a few minutes, she vomited up her stomach contents. I checked with Betsy what might have triggered it. She gave her both HeartGuard Plus and Gooberlicious. Either may have triggered it. We went back inside at noon. I fed her (one cup) and started preparing my brunch.

Afternoon Play

At 12:45, from the balcony, I spotted Dakota by the courtyard. I called Grace to show her. I had expected she would run to the door. Instead, she stood frozen, just gazing down at him. I pushed her inside and directed her to the door. At that point, she understood and tried to turn the knob. She raced down the stairway and ran to meet him. They played until 1:30.

When we came in, I finished preparing and eating my brunch. Grace passed out on the kitchen floor. Eventually she moved to the living room. Betsy gave Grace a few scraps of lamb. Grace swallowed them without chewing. Grace then retreated to her sofa and passed out. At 4:15, I left to go running. Betsy met me at Sunrise to visit Mom at 5:15. She left Grace free in the house.

Hurt Feelings

When we returned at 6:30, Grace sat calmly on her sofa. We praised her, and I gave her a treat. Betsy fed her (a cup and three-quarters).  We then went outside for a half an hour. During supper, Grace watched us. Betsy gave her a dental chew. Once she put her front paws on the table and once she barked. We pulled the joint portions from two chicken drumsticks and put them in her dish. When she barked, Betsy ordered her into her cage and locked her in. We left her there for about ten minutes.

Grace Week Fourteen
When I let her out of her cage, she went out on the balcony. She stayed there for about twenty minutes. She was sitting up on the lounge chair looking in. Obviously, her feelings were hurt. I invited her in and hugged her. She got new toy and proceeded to pull out the stuffing and play “tug and fetch” with it. Then she returned to the stuffing removal mode.

She jumped up on the sofa at about 8:30. At 9:30, I took her outside. When we returned at 9:45, she headed straight for our bed and jumped in. After my shower, I joined the family at 10:00. Betsy was afraid Grace might disturb her sleep. I called Grace to her bed. She jumped off of the bed and swiftly, obediently went to her cage. I then locked her in for the night.

  1. Hi!
Just got a borador puppy. Wondering how often do you exercise her per day? What types of exercise?

Also, do you crate train her while you are gone?

    1. Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks for stopping by. You have just found your best friend. You can find a blow-by-blow description by reading through each week of the blog Introducing Princess Grace. There’s some good stuff in the comments section on that page as well. Take your puppy out first thing to relieve herself and also right after dinner. Before you know it, she will be house trained. Don’t push it when she’s young as far as hours before she can go outside. I would say every six hours or so if you can do it. She loves to do puppy-play with other puppies. Otherwise, get a Kong ball (not a tennis ball) and play fetch or catch with her. Use treats to train her. Her kibble will do as a reward. Guard her from too much force on her young joints from bounding down stairs or other dogs putting their weight on her shoulders. Give her paper or cardboard to shred. I would say she could use three or four times a day for fifteen minutes or more to go outside and play, walk, or run.

We used a crate (bed, food, and while we left her home alone) for about five months for her at night and when we were gone for about three months. She likely could have been trusted sooner, but we didn’t try. I hope this helps.
