All of the items listed below reside in the core section of the author’s Bible study reference collection. These are time-tested works written by great Christian scholars. The Bible says “study to show yourself approved” (II Timothy 2:15). These Bible study references will help you do just that. They’re arranged approximately in priority order for building your own library. Simply click on the blue title links of the items you would like to select to see the current price and to place your order.
The second book listed, What’s the Bible All About, is mainly for newer Christians to help orient them to the Bible and provide context. It’s a great companion, especially for someone who’s decided to read the Bible through for the first time. Christians comfortable navigating God’s Word, could omit that book if they wanted to pare down the list. The Rose Book of Bible Charts, which is definitely a must-have for any Christian, will fill in some of the gaps.
The J. Vernon McGee Essential Bible Study Library, CDROM contains a topical Bible, Bible dictionary, lexicon, the Thru the Bible commentary, and much more. If you have a compatible computer and don’t mind accessing information on the computer rather than from printed books, this one item can save you considerable shelf space and money.
In this modern era of the Internet and computer search functions, Strong’s Concordance and Thayer’s Lexicon have lost a bit of their usefulness, but for those of you who would rather not tie your Bible study to the computer these are still great tools.
Finally, you may have noticed these selections lean heavily on the King James Version of the Bible. Unfortunately, the profit motive has driven an explosion of new Bible translations. Most cannot hold a candle to the KJV. Some of the selections listed here do come in alternate versions. If you must choose another translation, you may wish to consider picking a good one and sticking with it. It will reduce confusion and enable you to more readily memorize scripture.
