War Fear Spooks Stocks

Monday, stocks rose 0.9% in Asia but ended little changed in Europe and the U.S. on 18B shares traded. Precious metals and their miners gained 1%.

Tuesday, stocks closed little changed in Europe but rose 0.4% in Asia and the U.S. on 15B shares traded.

Wednesday, stocks gained 0.5% in Asia, lost 0.3% in Europe, and ended unchanged in the U.S. on 19B shares traded. Precious metals and their miners gained about 1%. Apple closed below 200. IBM ended above 280. The CPI for May came in lower than expected.

Thursday, stocks fell 0.3% in Asia and Europe but rose 0.4% in the U.S. on 24B shares traded. Precious metals gained 1% while their miners rose three times that amount.

Friday, stocks lost 1.4% in Asia, 0.9% in Europe, and 1.1% in the U.S. on 18B shares traded. The VIX shot up 16% to end in the fear zone at 20.82. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield rose 2% to end at 4.42. S&P 500 and NYSE closed below 6000 and 19,000 respectively. IBM ended below 280.
