Trade Hope Boosts Stocks

Monday, stocks rose 0.7% in Asia and fell 1.0% in Europe. Markets were closed in the U.S. for Memorial Day.

Tuesday, stocks fell 0.5% in Asia, rose slightly in Europe, and gained 1.5% in the U.S. on 17B shares traded. The VIX fell 15% to end at 18.96 and pivot to greed territory. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield fell 2% to end at 4.43.  Precious metals fell 1% and their miners shed twice that amount. The Dow, NASDAQ, and S&P 500 closed above their respective 42,000, 19,000, and 5900 benchmarks. Apple ended above 200, and IBM closed above 260.

Wednesday, stocks fell slightly in Asia, 0.7% in Europe, and 0.8% in the U.S. on 16B shares traded. S&P 500 index closed below 5900.

Thursday, stocks gained 0.9% in Asia, rose slightly in Europe, and advanced 0.3% in the U.S. on 19B shares traded. Precious metals gained 1%.  The S&P 500 closed above 5900. Apple ended below 200. IBM closed below 260.

Friday, stocks fell 0.6% in Asia but rose slightly in Europe and the U.S. on 20B shares traded. Precious metals fell 1%.  Apple ended above its 200 benchmark.
