Fear Grips the Market

Monday, stocks rose 0.5% in Asia and 1.1% in Europe but fell 1.0% in the U.S. on 17B shares traded. The VIX shot up 16% to close at 22.78 and returned to the fear zone driven by economic uncertainty. Precious metals gained 1%. The S&P 500 and NYSE indices ended below their respective 5900 and 20,000 benchmarks.

Tuesday, stocks fell slightly in Asia, lost 2.2% in Europe and 1.7% in the U.S. on 19B shares traded. Precious metals gained 1%. The Dow and S&P 500 indices closed below their 43,000 and 5800 levels respectively.

Wednesday, stocks gained 1.1% in Asia, 0.8% in Europe, and 1.3% in the U.S. on 16B shares traded.  The VIX fell 7% to end at 22.93.Precious metals gained 1%. and their miners advanced four times that amount. The Dow and S&P 500 closed above their respective 43,000 and 5800 levels.

Thursday, stocks gained 1.8% in Asia, ended little changed in Europe but lost 1.3% in the U.S. on 16B shares traded. The VIX advanced 13% to end at 24.87. The Dow and S&P 500 indices closed below their 43,000 and 5800 levels respectively. IBM ened below its 250 benchmark.

Friday, stocks lost 1.2% in Asia and 0.5% in Europe but gained 0.3% in the U.S. on 17B shares traded. The VIX declined 6% to end at 23.37. IBM closed above its 260 level. Finally, the Federal Reserve balance sheet declined 9B to 6.77T.
