Markets Take a Breather

Monday, stocks ended unchanged in Asia and little changed in Europe. Markets were closed in the U.S. for Memorial Day.

Tuesday, stocks closed little changed in Asia but fell 0.6% in Europe and in the U.S. on 12B shares traded. The VIX rose 5% to close at 12.92. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield moved up 2% to end at 4.54. Precious metals gained 3% and their miners advanced 2%. The NASDAQ ended above its 17,000 benchmark and posted another record high close.

Wednesday, stocks fell 1.6% in Asia, 1.0% in Europe, and 1.2% in the U.S. on 11B shares traded. The VIX moved up 11% to close at 14.28. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield moved up 2% to end at 4.62. Precious metals lost about 1% and their miners dropped three times that amount. The NASDAQ, S&P 500, and NYSE indices closed below their 17,000, 5300, 18,000 benchmarks respectively while Apple eked out a close above 190.

Thursday, stocks lost 1.1% in Asia but gained 0.5% in Europe and 0.3% in the U.S. on 12B shares traded. The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield fell 2% to end at 4.55. Precious metals lost about 1% but their miners gained 1%.

Friday, stocks closed unchanged in Asia but rose 0.3% in Europe and 1.3% in the U.S. on 15B shares traded. The VIX fell 11% to close at 12.92. Precious metals and their miners gave up 1%. The NYSE index closed above 18,000.
