TV Reception Problems — Solved

On September 16, 2019, I noticed that our TV and DVR was limited to receiving only a few channels on our (indoor) antenna. I tried an old indoor antenna. That didn’t help. Since I had planned to upgrade to an attic antenna, I ordered one. When that didn’t work, I checked with a neighbor. He said, we needed to rescan the channels.

It turns out that the FCC decided to change the frequencies of channels in an operation called “FCC repack.” You can find information about that here:

When will your area be affected by the FCC repack?

You can find specifics for each channel in your range by going here and submitting your zip code:

If your receive television via cable, this does not apply to you. If you use an antenna to receive television signals and have lost them recently, you likely can solve the problem by scanning again for channels. A new antenna is not necessary.

After the first scan, I had 47 channels, but 26-1 through 6 didn’t produce a picture. After I positioned the antenna in a better spot, a second scan yielded six more channels. This is with the antenna still in the room with the television. Eventually, I expect to move the antenna to the attic, but for now, we have around 40 working channels.
