CPI Hot Again

Monday, stocks fell 1.2% in Asia, 0.3% in Europe but were little changed, and slightly in the U.S. on 11B shares traded.

Tuesday, stocks rose 0.5% in Asia, 1.0% in Europe, and 0.6% in the U.S. on 12B shares traded. The VIX fell 9% to end at 13.84. Precious metals fell 1% and their miners lost twice that amount. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 39,000. The NYSE ended above 17,000 to a record high close. Bitcoin also logged a record high above 73,000. The big news came from the latest hot CPI print.

Wednesday, stocks ended down slightly in Asia, up slightly in Europe, and gained 0.3% in the U.S. on 11B shares traded. Precious metals and their miners gained 2%. NYSE ended above 18,000 to another record high close. 

Thursday, stocks closed unchanged in Asia, down slightly in Europe, and down 0.7% in the U.S. on 13B shares traded. The VIX rose 5% to end at 14.40.  The 10-Year U.S. Treasury bond yield rose 3% to end at 4.30. The Dow Jones Industrials and NYSE ended below 39,000 and 17,000 respectively. Friday, stocks gained 1.4% in Asia but ended little changed in Europe and the U.S. on 19B shares traded. The higher volume came from options expiration. Precious metals gained 1%. The NASDAQ ended below 16,000.

Finally, the Federal Reserve balance sheet grew 3B to 7.54T.
